Hi there! I'm Ann Arbor City Council Member Chip Smith, a Democrat representing the Fifth Ward. If you want to learn about what I stand for, watch my community values video.
Two years ago, I ran for City Council to bring more engaged and forward-thinking leadership to City Hall. I also pledged to roll up my sleeves to make government work better for the citizens of Ann Arbor.
In the 18 months I've been on City Council, I have made considerable progress: I’ve authored, sponsored, and/or co-sponsored more than 40 adopted resolutions and pieces of legislation. I’ve also worked with you to:
Strengthen the 1,4 dioxane standard to keep our drinking water safe
Adopt a vulnerable road user ordinance to protect cyclists and pedestrians
Expand local funding for street, sidewalk, bicycle, and crosswalk improvements
Quadruple the lane miles of roadway improved every year
Commit to meeting the Paris Climate Agreement
Fund a street tree program to capture stormwater and preserve neighborhood character
Create a bulk buy solar program for residents
Establish Ann Arbor as a welcoming community to immigrants and refugees
I'm running for re-election because, while we’ve come a long way, we still have a lot to accomplish. We need sustainable funding for affordable housing and climate adaptation programs. We need to address the shortage of housing. And we still need to focus on improving our roads so they are safe for all users.
Please, take a look around the site and let me know if you have any questions or concerns - or if you want to add your name as a supporter!
I'd be humbled to again have your support in the Democratic primary on Tuesday, August 8th.
